“What’s Up! – Bellingham’s Music Magazine Since 1998”

May 2017 issue

Aaron Sanger’s most recent release, Lightness in the Dark, is an epitomizing example of Pacific Northwestern folk and Americana. The wide array of musical style and instrumentation is very welcome for a folk album and Aaron’s deep, mid-range singing voice holds it all together with
melodies that reminded me a bit of more Mettle-era Roger Waters.

The recording quality of this album is very raw and lush and makes you feel as though you are sitting in the room with Sanger and the gang as this album is being performed for you. The real slice of life feelings that inspired the themes of songs such as “Moonbeams” and “Garden of Children” really add to the deep, empathetic vibe that Aaron creates. It’s not hard to understand where Aaron was really coming from while writing these pieces, which is a welcome change with all of the deep use of non-relatable metaphors that seem to influence a lot of modern folk artists.

The album feels as though it was cut from time, but recorded in a modern context giving a sonic superiority to more classic influence. The accompaniment of other instrumentation brought by Jan Peters, Brian Cunningham, Kera-Lynne Newman and Aaron Malcomb add a great deal to the feel and overall ambience of the greater piece as well. Including violin, piano, harmonica, bagpipes, and even bouzouki, everyone came together for a great, deep feel that brings a sincere feeling of nostalgia and beauty to this album.

If you’re unfamiliar with Aaron Sanger, definitely go pick up Lightness in the Dark and hear it for yourself.
